Molly Day 2 Grumpin'

Molly Day 2 Grumpin', originally uploaded by jakevenard.

Molly is now 2 days old. She's not actually crying in this photo, just making the face while asleep.

We got home from the hospital at 5:30 last night and spent the evening just hanging out and getting to know Molly a little more.

We had the expected long night last night. We were up with her until after 11:00. She slept a bit, then I think Trina was up with her until 3 a.m or so, which included a 1.5 hour feeding session. Then I was up with her, managed to nod off with her when Trina awoke at 5:30 and came out to feed her. Trina fed her for a while, then decided to try supplimenting her breast feeding with a little formula.

That did the trick. Molly just wasn't getting enough colostrum. She is much happier with a full belly - just like her dad. We'll continue with that until Trina's milk starts flowing in the next day or two.

Trina is taking a much needed nap after her 2.5 hours of sleep. She's feeling pretty good overall; I think it is like the energy of being at mile 2 of a marathon.

One Day Old

Molly turned 1 day old today at 2:58 pm. Had a long night of trading off napping and holding her with Trina. I think we managed to link up about 5 hrs of sleep each. She's eating real well and I've changed 3 full diapers.

Both she and mommy are doing great. Hopefully we will be given the okay to go home this evening.

This really raises the bar on what one can rate as a "10" in life.

What more can i say.

Here is Molly Claire Venard at 1 minute old.

Pink Clothes Needed

its an 8 lb 8 oz little girl!

2 hrs

It's 1 pm. 2 hours of pushing done. making progress

show time

prepping to start pushing!!!1

still contracting

Trina has her epidural. It seems to have slowed things down a bit. At least she is fairly comfortable.

Back to the Hospital

7:00 a.m. Things are picking up. Back to the hospital.

Birthday?

Trina start having some contractions at 11:00 last night. She woke me at 1:00 a.m. when they started getting stronger. By 3:00 the contractions were down to under 5 minutes apart, so we called the hospital (as instructed in birthing classes there). They suggested we come in.

So we did.

Trina was hooked up to the monitor and we watched contractions and baby heart beats for about an hour. They figured she has a while yet and since labor usually progresses faster in the comfort of you home, they gave her a shot of something good in her butt and sent us home for a while.

She's stoned and in the bath tub.

It's 5:00 a.m. now, might have to make some breakfast soon.

Oscar will not leave Trina's side and is super mellow. He obviously senses something is up.

It seems everyone has the same question...

3 weeks to go?

Well, three weeks to go until the initial measured due date of March 3. Last week, the doctor (Dr. Shaunie Keyes) said that she didn't think that Trina would make it all the way to the due date. Sounds good to Trina. To quote a friend this weekend who said that at the end of her pregnancy she would have "pulled it out her nose if she could".

Trina's doctor visits are now weekly. Today her blood pressure was a bit high, so the doctor assigned her bed rest until Friday, when she'd have another doctor visit to check the pressure again. She's still allowed to work from home, but reducing it to just what is entirely necessary. Oscar and Daisy will be happy to have her home all day.

In the mean time, we just wait... Until about a week ago the time has gone pretty quickly. Now we are anxious to meet the little person and begin that journey.

Last weekend we went up to the Skagit Valley in search of fields full of snow geese, swans, and a nice place to go walk the dogs. We quickly found some swans (the first Trina had seen) and continued on to a place that the WDFW indicated was a good place to go. Well, I chose the wrong entry point for the Fir Island Wildlife Management Area that turned out to be the 'preserve' and doesn't allow dogs. We were quickly scolded by some birders w/ huge spotting scopes. The spot was lame anyway since you could only walk out about 100 yards on a dike and that was the entire permitted access. We tried another spot down the road and same gig - no dogs.

A couple miles down the road we found an access point that didn't exclude dogs and went for a short walk, hung out a bit.

Then as we were leaving we saw three guys standing at the "trailhead" (hard to call it that when the trail is 200 yards long) with enormous lenses (likely 500 or 600 mm). One of the guys standing there was Art Wolffe, the famous nature photographer who resides in Seattle. I thought about introducing myself, but decided to just hover a bit and see if there was any beta to gather, then went on our merry way. Photography was pretty nill w/ the exception of some large piles of driftwood.

We tried to find anther access point or a cool place to walk the dogs, but ended up in the little town of La Conner. We were pleasantly surprised that it is actually a cute little town w/ its own brew pub and a few decent looking restaurants. We'll be back. We never found any of the fields full of snow geese that are supposed to inhabit Fir Island (part of the Skagit River Delta), but had a good time nonetheless. So after that little journey we went home and watched Travels to the Edge on PBS - Art Wolffe's weekly half-hour tv show that follows him around the world taking photos of nature and native cultures. It's on at 10:30 every sunday, so we record it since we are rarely home then.

Kirkland February 4 Sunset Swim

Kirkland sunset 020409 1002, originally uploaded by jakevenard.

Stopped by Houghton beach in Kirkland on Wednesday evening to take some pictures of what I hoped would be a good sunset. As it turns out there were two teenage girls (and a younger brother supervising) with a video camera, filming themselves running and jumping off the end of the dock...in February!!! Had no idea what they were doing, asside from the video camera until they said "Ready, now!" and ran down the deck. There were numerous versions of "Holly shit this is cold!" after they jumped in. They were wearing wetsuits, but probably never comprehended 40-degree water.

That was bold.

I was able to switch from the telephoto to the wide angle and get them just as they were getting back to the beach.

T-3 Weeks

It's been quite some time since I've posted, as usual. Life has been crazy busy, but without many moments of significance to write about. Most of the preparation for the new one were done by December with the exception of acquiring the little things like bottles, diapers, wipes, formula (just in case), and those types of goodies. Trina has had two baby showers this month - one in Bonners w/ the family and one over here on the 'wet side' with friends. Lots of baby shwag.

The novelty of pregnancy has worn off for Trina and is getting anxious to be done with that, meet the baby, be able to put her shoes on, and have a beer/glass of wine.

Last night, Trina was growing concerned about the baby's lack of movement during the day. Normally is is kicking and malforming her belly all day long, but not yesterday. So, after dinner I poked, prodded, and pushed the belly to try and elicit a response. A response I got. The little thing kicked like Pele'. That was fun.

Today will be another day on the bike. I am not sure where to ride yet: solo? with the team? or with one of the other subgroups forming for various rides... Solo would be more efficient, but with the teammate would be social, and that is fun too. Hmm. At least it's dry.
